Specific lots of Evanger's Hunk of Beef dog food are being recalled because of exposure to a drug used to euthanize animals. Pentobarbital was found in one lot of its Au Jus product. Pentobarbital has the potential to cause a variety of side effects ranging from drowsiness to death.

Evanger’s is recalling any Hunk of Beef products manufactured from June 6 – June 13, 2016 – the week the contaminated lot was manufactured.

Lot numbers of affected products, which have an expiration date of 2020, start with the following:
• 1816E03HB
• 1816E04HB
• 1816E06HB
• 1816E07HB
• 1816E13HB

The second half of the barcode of these products reads 20109 and can be found on the back of the product label.

Five dogs became sick and one dog died after consuming the product with the lot number 1816E06HB13 as of February 3.

Pentobarbital can cause drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea and sometimes death, the company said.
