Dave Legvold, who is a farmer west of Northfield, was on AM Minnesota today. Dave was one of five farmers, along with their agronomists, from the United States chosen to be a 4R Advocate. The 4R Advocate program is sponsored by the Fertilizer Institute, which is a leading voice for the fertilizer industry. It represents public policy, communication, international trade, transportation, worker health and safety along with environmental issues.

The Fertilizer Institute mission is to represent, promote and protect the fertilizer industry. One way to do that is to promote the efficient and environmentally responsible use of fertilizer. This is where the 4R Advocate program fits in. The 4R stands for the Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time and Right Place when it comes to fertilizer applications. Sure the fertilizer industry want to sell as much fertilizer as possible, but on the other hand, they want the fertilizer they sell to be used as efficiently as possible and in an environmentally responsible way. Educating farmers and agronomists to use the 4R Nutrient Stewardship practices is a way to do accomplish that goal.
