The deadline for purchasing or changing your crop insurance is March 15, 2018. For farmers that have had crop insurance in the past, the polices automatically renew. However, if you would like to change the level of crop insurance or the types like fall harvest option that also must be done by March 15, 2018. There are many other new wrinkles that are available so it is important to get an appointment with your crop insurance agent.

The USDA's Risk Management Agency crop insurance program is the base of almost all farmers risk management plans. In fact it is also collateral for most farm operating loans. It is against the law for Ag Lenders to require you purchase crop insurance from the institution they represent. However, it is legal for them to require that you do have adequate crop before they renew your operating loan.

There are many levels and types of crop insurance that can be very confusing. It seems every year there is something new for farmers to consider. That is why you need a private crop insurance agent that knows your operation and can help you develop a crop insurance plan for your farm.
