It seems every year consumers have more interest in accessing locally produced food. The result is more farmers are trying to figure out how to direct market to consumers or accessing Farmers Markets. We now even have a name for it called the Cottage Food Industry in Minnesota. I guess it is not surprising we have food safety laws that have been passed by the Legislature and regulations from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture applying to the Cottage Food Industry.

One of those requirements is food safety training so you can register in Minnesota as a cottage food producer. The University of Minnesota Extension Service will be hosting a Cottage Food Producer Food Safety training webinar on Saturday March 27, 2021 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. You can view all the training options and register at the website: https://extension.umn.edu/node/4906.

The webinar "focuses on food safety practices for all processes covered under the cottage food law including drying, baking, confections, jams and jellies, acid and acidified fruit and vegetables, and fermentation. You will learn how to produce, package, label, store, and transport a safe product."

How much a box of Girl Scout cookies cots throughout the years
