John Althoff, Cannon Falls Mayor tells KDHL he expects a large crowd at the Tuesday, April 5, 2022 City Council Meeting at City Hall.

The City is contemplating contracting with one garbage hauler to handle solid waste collections for all of Cannon Falls.

The Mayor was not positive on the number of haulers in Cannon Falls but says the multiple garbage trucks on the streets of his city add to the wear and tear of those streets.

He said whatever the residents want he will agree to do.

A internet check of garbage haulers that serve the Cannon Falls area brought approximately 20 results including more than one Waste Management location (Northfield, Rochester, Burnsville, just to list a few)

Althoff says in theory having the haulers bid on providing the service should result in a savings to residents because the winning bidder will serve the entire community and have a guaranteed income for providing the services.

I asked if it's government's role to put private businesses out of business.  He said he understood my point and replied Cannon Falls already has one company provide their recycling services.

Most of the sanitation companies that came up in my search were smaller operations than Waste Management.

That's every other sanitation company in the United States. Waste Management Inc. is  the largest waste management company in the country.

In 2021 the company brought in over $14 billion dollars.

How does a small company compete with that?

One of the items sure to come up will be how long the contract will be to provide solid waste collection services.

The Cannon Falls City Council Meeting begins 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2022.
