Are Minnesota Firefighters Underpaid?
I think it's safe to say that being a firefighter takes a certain kind of courage. Could you run into a building when it's engulfed in a scorching blaze? I'd rather step outside in January without a jacket. So you'd think that firefighters would be well compensated, right?
That's why I was surprised to find out just how little firefighters in Minnesota make per year compared to other states. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Minnesota firefighters earn a median salary of $29,820 a year. Compare that to North Dakota, which has a median salary of $44,110 - or Wisconsin at $36,580.
So what gives? Interestingly enough, it turns out that there's a huge gap between the highest ($62,220) and lowest ($20,580) earning firefighters in Minnesota. I'm guessing that might be the difference between being a firefighter in a larger city versus a smaller town, but it's still pretty shocking. You can check out the full results of the study here. I think we can do better!
