A Real-Life ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ Story

Weekend at Bernie’s was a crazy movie. The movie is about two guys who find an error at their job and report it to their boss, Bernie. Bernie thanks them and invites them to his beach house where he intends to kill them, but he's killed by an assassin first. When the two guys get there, they feel like they must pretend Bernie is alive and it just gets crazier from there.

They carry a lifeless body around for the whole movie pretending he is alive. I will admit that I was not a fan of the movie Weekend at Bernie’s mostly because it seemed silly and unbelievable to me. Unfortunately, a couple of guys in Carlow, Ireland decided to give it a try in real life. 

The Independent reported that two men carried a dead body into the post office in order to pick up the deceased man’s pension check. They felt like they needed to bring the man’s body because he was well known by the post office. The people who saw it happen did not find it silly or funny; they were horrified.

A local woman’s daughter saw it happen and said, "She was leaving my house at the time and said the man looked unwell as his feet were dragging the ground." She also said that there was a line at the post office that the men waited in, because they would only allow three people at a time inside.  

Most of the people that saw the event thought he needed medical attention, so it did not take long for the authorities to get involved. The two men did not end up getting any money, and they are now being investigated. The authorities said, "A postmortem will be conducted by the Office of the State Pathologist, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation."

I do not know if the two guys that tried this had ever seen Weekend at Bernie's, but they found out that it isn’t like the movies.
