It's about halfway through spring break. Your elementary-age kids are bouncing off the walls. Your high school-age teens are sleeping until noon and glued to their phone or computer for the rest of the day. It might be too late to jet away to a beach or a remote island where they have reanimated dinosaurs through the discovery of DNA frozen for centuries.

What can you do that doesn't need much money or planning?

We took our college-age daughter to the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul a few years ago and had a great time. It probably helps that she was studying biology. There are many goodies there that work for young and old, alike. In fact, it appears they have a Game Changers exhibit that my son might really go for.

If you feeling brave enough, the Sea Life Aquarium at the Mall of America has a new creepy, crawly exhibit that displays insects from the rain forest.

Even closer to home would be a trip to Cabela's. While not dinosaurs, the taxidermied animals are always a sight to behold. Right across the freeway is a collection of over 150 animals from around the world. The Rad Zoo is a great local treasure.

You can find indoor water parks in Owatonna and the Twin Cities. Even a trip Wisconsin Dells isn't out of the question for an impromptu excursion. Once we took the train from Red Wing to the Dells. Then we met up with someone with a vehicle. It was a fun adventure, except for the time-share pitch we sat through!

For those on a shoestring budget, pitch a tent in the basement and read stories or watch movies. Depending on the wind and the temperature this weekend in Owatonna, making use of the great trail system gets the kids, and the adults, up and moving. Some trails are impacted by flooding, but plenty are water and snow free.
