I took this picture last Friday afternoon when I was out at the farm. This is my field of pea beans, or second-crop beans after peas. This is the first time I saw the field after I planted it on July 10. That is about as late as you can plant beans and hope they might get mature enough to produce beans. Normally I plant beans with a maturity rating of around group 2.0. These beans are a very early group 0.8.

When I was planting the beans on a Friday night there, was an 80 percent chance of rain the next day. Well, it did not rain for two and a half weeks. I was surprised at how many beans did germinate and emerge without a rain. If you look closely at the photo, you can see an area of much smaller beans about 4 inches tall. They did not germinate until after the rain. The taller beans were flowering and even the small beans were starting to flower. Will there be any beans to harvest? It all depends on the weather, but at least something is growing in the field even if it turns into a cover crop.
