Hayfield girls basketball head coach Fred Kindschy said before Friday night's HVL game with Kenyon-Wanamingo his team needed to limit its turnovers.

Boy was he right.

Kenyon-Wanamingo defeated Hayfield 57-44 thanks in large part to scoring 19 points off turnovers to Hayfield's six.

The game started well for the Vikings. They had a 14-7 lead over the Knights when Kenyon-Wanamingo went on a 12-0 run and led 22-18 at the half.

Junior Mara Quam had 11 of her 29 points in the first half and finished the game 9 of 10 from the free throw line for Kenyon-Wanamingo.

Junior Savannah Blees added 16 for the Knights, meaning those two players outscored the Hayfield team.

Blees and Quam were joined by 5-foot-10 junior Morgan Burow as selections for our Held Bus Service Knights of the game.

Burow scored a couple of points and had a number of rebounds to provide some spark off the bench.

Hayfield was led by 5-foot-11 Maggie Streightiff with 13 points, and 5-foot-10 senior Rachel Ausrud added 11.

The Vikings' 1-3-1 half court defense gave the Knights fits early but eventually Blees and Quam in particular were able to attack the zone.

Kenyon-Wanamingo is now 2-1 in the HVL and 3-3 overall; Hayfield fell to 0-2 in conference play and 2-3 overall.

Hayfield is at Triton on Tuesday and hosts Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Friday while Kenyon-Wanamingo is at Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Tuesday and goes to Goodhue on Friday to play the first game of a varsity doubleheader.
