Before Shotgun Rider tour stops, Tim McGraw has been giving mortgage-free homes to war veterans as part of Operation Homefront. He tells Taste of Country he gets something in return, although it's not something he can hold.

"The most meaningful thing I get is these guys telling me they got some foundation for their families," McGraw says. "Because they provide the foundation for our family and safety, so when these guys can tell me their daughter has a bed that her teddy bear is gonna be on, that means a lot to me."

The singer talked to ToC before his Saturday night (June 13) set at the 2015 Taste of Country Music Festival. The response came to a question about the gift Brantley Gilbert had received during a Wounded Warrior Project ride. Army sniper Justin Patterson gave Gilbert his Purple Heart, and the emotional moment was captured on video.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re red or blue, it doesn’t matter if you’re Northern or Southern, it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white … what matters is those guys, without question, go on the wall every night and take care of us," McGraw insists.

There is a personal reason the "Diamond Rings and Old Bar Stools" singer got involved with Chase and Operation Homefront. He shares that his sister is a veteran of the first Persian Gulf war (Operation Desert Shield) and his uncle is a Vietnam War veteran. His grandfather is also a World War II vet.

McGraw is one of four headliners at Country Jam in Grand Junction, Colo. this weekend, June 18-21.
