The Faribault Middle School cafeteria was packed Tuesday for the DFL Caucus, where Bernie Sanders captured the presidential preference ballot.

For the first time, the Minnesota DFL made the vote binding, meaning the votes cast at the DFL's precinct caucuses would determine how many delegates each presidential candidate would receive from Minnesota.

Voting in Faribault went like this:

  • Bernie Sanders: 332
  • Hillary Clinton: 171
  • Uncommitted: 4
  • Donald Trump: 2

None of the party officials knew whether the Trump votes were a joke or somebody actually thought he was running as a Democrat.

A total of 509 votes were cast in the presidential preference ballot in Faribault. No county totals have been received from party officials as of this posting.

Hopefully we will have Rice County numbers sometime Wednesday monring.

The DFL Second Congressional District Convention is April 30 in Shakopee and the First Congressional District Convention is scheduled for May 14 in Worthington.

The Minnesota DFL has 77 delegates and GOP 38 delegates. On the DFL side, 2,383 delegates are needed to win the nomination and on the GOP side 1,237.
