South Central College has a new mechatronics program on their Faribault campus, and we will get some details about the program on AM Minnesota.

Barb Embacher, dean of Workforce Education and Training, and mechatronics instructor Mike Busch will be our guests.

Mechatronics is technology that combines electronics and mechanical engineering. It's a relatively new approach to product design and development.

According to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the word mechatronics was used first in the early 1970s by the Japanese industry. The word was used in relation to the development of the world's first industrial robots.

"We are seeing ever-smaller camcorders and compact disc players, which would have never been plausible by adopting a traditional single disciplinary or combinational approach," according to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

It's all very fascinating to me, and I'm eager to learn more about it. It appears anyway that mechatronics isn't a subject or technology but rather a philosophy of doing things.

Tune in at 9:30AM and be informed.
