This afternoon I drove up to Cannon Falls for a meeting sponsored by Merchants Bank. Topics included the new Farm Bill because the deadline for updating bases and yields is Friday. The next deadline for deciding on ARC County or PLC is March 31.

There was also discussion on crop insurance. The deadline for purchasing or changing your coverage is March 15.

One more topic was discussed at length, and it was not very entertaining or fun. That would be projected budgets and profitability producing corn and soybeans in 2015. Quite simply, corn and soybean prices, at least at this point, are well below the cost of producing it. Things can change as there is a whole growing season ahead, but will they? The USDA is projecting cash corn prices at $3.50 a bushel and beans around $9.50 for a number of years.
