Junior Mara Quam scored her 1,000th point on her first basket of the game for Kenyon-Wanamingo in an impressive 63-50 win at New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Tuesday night.

Quam scored 11 first-half points and had to sit nearly the final seven minutes of the first half with three fouls.

She finished the game with 23 points.

Classmates Savannah Bleess and Kasey Dummer picked up some of the scoring needed to seal the victory.

Bleess finished with 26 points and four three-point baskets.

Dummer added 11 points and three three-pointers.

Kenyon-Wanamingo led 33-20 at the half and maintained that lead in the end.

I had a hard time selecting the Held Bus Service Knights of the game because every single player who hit the floor contributed to the win.

Sophomore Tess Hokanson had just one three-point basket but rebounded tenaciously, senior Siri Quam did not score but also contributed some quality minutes defensively and handling the ball, and junior Morgan Burow also did not score but added some toughness inside when NRHEG made a couple of nice comebacks in the second half.

Kenyon-Wanamingo finished with 10 three-point baskets and NRHEG had four.

The Knights were 11 of 15 from the free throw line while the Panthers were 4 of 7.

NRHEG junior twins Maddie and Marnie Wagner led the Panther attack with 13 and 11 points respectively.

It was just the third loss of the season for the Panthers and the Knights are now 6-5 on the year.

The Panthers were ranked 12th in the state in Class 2A in the latest Minnesota Basketball News rankings and host Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Friday and the Knights are off until Monday when Triton is in the Castle.

I will have the K-W boys game at Triton on KDHL on Monday night.

I should have taken a picture of the 1,000-point cookies Mara's parents shared with the fans. They were scrumpcious and from Hi-Quality Bakery in Cannon Falls.

If she stays healthy it won't be long and Mara will overtake her dad's career total at Kenyon-Wanamingo.

Maybe he'll bring root beer floats!
