Kenyon-Wanamingo and Hayfield Delight Crowd in Castle
What a game! The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights and Hayfield Vikings girls basketball teams played their second overtime game against each other this season, with the Knights prevailing 67-62 in two overtimes. Early in the season K-W traveled to Hayfield and won in triple overtime.
Kenyon-Wanamingo jumped out to a 31-20 halftime lead thanks in large part to Brittany Flom's three triples. Just a few minutes into the second half, though, Hayfield's Jo Bungum got in the zone, as they say, and brought her team from behind and into the lead.
It was a see-saw contest down the stretch. With 6.5 seconds to go in regulation and in need of a three-point play, Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy designed a play for Brett Zahnle to score a three from the corner and send the game into overtime. The Knights had two fouls to give at the time, but evidently didn't want to chance a foul on a three-point shot. It was 61-61 after the first overtime.
The Held Bus Service Knights of the night were sophomore guard Mara Quam, senior forward Brittany Flom and a couple of young ladies who came off the bench and played some quality varsity minutes. Megan Flom hit a huge three in the second half and Kaitlin Knot took a charge toward the end of the second overtime that sealed the victory for Kenyon-Wanamingo. Quam finished with 24 points, including 10 in the two overtimes. Brittany Flom finished the night with 14 points. Senior Emily Ashland also tallied 10 points for K-W. Bungum finished with 29 points, including six three-point baskets, and Zahnle had 12 for the Vikings. The loss dealt a blow to Hayfield's hopes for the blue championship.
K-W has three conference games left against Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Pine Island and Cannon Falls. Hayfield has no blue division games, but does finish their season against Rochester Lourdes and Byron; Goodhue finishes against Cannon Falls, Lake City and Rochester Lourdes. Kenyon-Wanamingo is in Waterville on Monday night for a nonconference tilt against a very good Waterville-Elysian-Morristown team. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on Power 96 Radio 95.9 FM.
