The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights volleyball team travelled to Hayfield for their season opener Tuesday night and had a happy bus ride home.  They scored a 3 sets to 1 victory over a team that has been mentioned in the top rankings in the state in Class A. The scores were 25-17, 27-29, 25-15, 25-20.  The second set was a fan's dream with long rallies and an incredibly hard fought affair.  Hayfield jumped out to a large lead and looked like they were going to run away with the set when K-W came roaring back.  The score was 24-20 and the Knights pushed it into extra play, even getting set point twice, but after 7 set points Hayfield persevered 29-27. The Knights sported a varied attack led by Seniors Megan Quam and Brittany Flom who collected 11 and 9 kills respectively according to unofficial POWER 96 stats.  Sophmore Mara Quam added 7 kills.  Flom's Sophmore sister Megan had some awesome blocks at the net and new setters Junior Siri Quam and Sophmore Mia Peterson did their job.  5'1 Sophmore Kasey Dummer is quick and moves side to side very well.  Our unofficial serving statistics had the Knights with 10 aces and 11 errors.  Brittany Flom led the way with 4 ace serves.  For Hayfield Senior Johanna Bungum had 10 kills and Fresman Maggie Streightiff collected 7 and doled out a number of assists.  The Vikings are now 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in the HVL and K-W is 1-0.  The Knights host Triton Thursday in the Castle while Hayfield is in Lake City.  Other HVL volleyball action Tuesday, conference matches, Kasson-Mantorville 3 Goodhue 2, Cannon Falls 3 Rochester Lourdes 0, Zumbrota-Mazeppa 3 Triton 2 and Stewartville 3 Lake City 0. In a non-conference match Medford bested Byron 3-2.
