This morning I had the "privilege" of spending some time at the Rice County Courthouse. Fortunately, in my life I have spent very little time at a county courthouse! This was the third time in the 14 years that I have lived in Faribault that I have been summoned for jury duty. I was not chosen to be one of the seven on the jury, and I was not disappointed. However, if chosen I would have served because it is our civic responsibility. It does help that you can call in each day after 4:30 so at least you have some time to make arrangements.

It is inconvenient to try and organize your day not knowing whether you need to report for jury duty the next morning. When you think about it, we are fortunate we do have a criminal and civil justice system to settle disagreements. At the Farm Broadcasters Convention, I was talking with a fellow farm broadcaster who had served two tours of duty in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan there is not system in place to settle disagreements or conflicts. He told me they settle disagreements with a stick, rock, fist, knife or gun. Another great example of the wisdom of our forefathers when they founded this great country!
