As I drive around the community, I am always happy to see little gardens set up. Some are just flowers, some filled with vegetables. I myself do not have the space to garden, but I imagine, that someday, when I've found my dream home, there will be a plot out back.

I can't take credit for the flowers in the photo, they are from my grandmother's garden. Every summer she plants a few rows of these gorgeous flowers, just behind them is a few rows of small purple blooms, and beyond that is cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, peppers, and more. This in part saves her a trip into town to pick up groceries, allows her to make jams and can things for later, make family recipes or give something new a try, gives her an excuse to spend some time outside, and gives her a sense of pride knowing she grew it. My grandparents grew up in the depression, and I think knowing that that they are self sustainable gives them assurance.

Gardening isn't possible for me right now, but someday, I'll give my (hopefully) green thumb a try and you'll find me on a sunny day gathering flowers from my own garden to place on the table!

Do you garden?
