Faribault Falcon senior Maria McDonough finished fourth in the all-around and was in the top 10 in three of the four events at the state gymnastics meet Saturday.

McDonough was the defending state champion on the balance beam and finished third this year.

It's rare to be a repeat champ. I looked it up, and only 14 young women in the history of Minnesota high school gymnastics have been able to repeat as balance beam champs.

The Falcon senior was seventh on the vault and finished 10th in the floor exercise.

Considering a finish on the uneven bars that did not make the top 30, it tells you just how well she did in the other events.

Owatonna finished sixth in the team competition in Class AA and senior Steph Kretlow was second on the vault.

St. Cloud Tech was the Class AA team champion and Detroit Lakes the Class A team champion.

Austin placed fourth and Mankato West sixth in Class A, so the Big Nine was well represented.

Megan Trollen, a senior from East Ridge of Woodbury, was the all-around champion in Class AA and her classmate Wendy Andersen placed second.
