Faribault Girls Hockey Loses Conference Opener at Mayo

Senior goalie Camryn Salmonsen stood on her head Tuesday night in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Rochester Mayo Spartans at Graham Arena in Rochester.

Salmonsen had 45 saves in the game.  Many of them point blank shots.

Rochester Mayo freshman Devynn Priest opened the scoring in the game 5:16 into the contest with a speedy skate to the net .

Faribault answered at the 11:00 mark with a gorgeous Allyson McCoshen goal when she lifted the puck over the left shoulder of senior Spartan goalie Sophie Butterfass and buried the puck in the net.  An assist went to junior Kayli Burkhartzmeyer

That was the score after one period.  Faribault 1 Mayo 1.

4:30 into the second period Mayo senior Lindsey Grafstrom scored with an assist from senior Maddi Lutz.

Mayo got their third goal 6:50 of the second period when senior Eryn Fjelsted gave the Spartans a 3-1 lead.

The Falcons answered less than two minutes later at the 8:46 mark when Olivia Williamson scored assisted by Haley Lang.

The score going into our Faribault Foods Intermission was 3-2 Rochester Mayo.

It looked like there was going to be a scoreless third period thanks in part to some very physical play by both teams and no penalties called.

Lang scored with 47 seconds left in regulation on a beautiful pass from McCoshen and after Salmonsen stopped  a number of stuff attempts in the final seconds the two teams headed to overtime.

The overtime was back and forth again with some physical play.

Right out of the gate Lang nearly scored from high in the slot.  The game winner came with just 22.6 seconds to go in the overtime when senior Megan Adair scored to seal the win for Rochester Mayo.

Mayo outshot Faribault 49-34.  The Spartans were 1 for 3 on the power play and Faribault was 0 for 2.

The Spartans are now 2-2 and Faribault dropped to 0-3 with the results.

Faribault’s next game is Tuesday, November when they host St. Paul Highland Park in their home opener at the Faribault Ice Arena.
