Last month the Faribault Falcons traveled to Austin and came home with a 4-2 win but Saturday they saw a different goalie and another result.

Austin won 2-1 in Faribault on Saturday on Hockey Day Minnesota.

Packer sophomore goalie Ryan Flanders was seeing his first significant action of the season and he was good.

Faribault had numerous quality shots but couldn't hammer them home. Shots on goal were 25 for Faribault and 23 for Austin.

Austin scored first on a Hunter Guyette goal (4) 5:50 into the game, assisted by Dylan Svoboda (6) and Jack Dankert (6).

Faribault answered less than two minutes later at 7:06 on a Brett Kelly goal (11) that probably should have been credited to Cade Kletschka. The puck went high in the air and bounced into the goal.

Troy Temple was taping the game for FCTV and sent me a copy of the shot and it does appear to hit the skate of Kletschka, which is what sent it into the air and it bounced in. The official told the Faribault scorer it was a Kelly goal and evidently didn't see the deflection.

There was no scoring in the second period and Faribault had a costly penalty late in the second, giving Austin the second intermission to design a play to score on the power play and it worked. The penalty happened with just seven seconds to go in the period.

Packer Breyden Merritt was behind the goal with the puck and made a quick pass to Bryar Flanders in the slot and he hammered the game winner. It was Merritt's ninth assist and Flanders' seventh goal of the year.

Faribault fell to 4-9 on the season and 3-6 in the Big Nine and Austin is 7-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

The Falcons travel to Owatonna on Monday night for a 5PM drop of the puck.
