The Faribault Falcon boys basketball team extended their winning streak to six games with a convincing 58-37 win over Rochester Mayo in Rochester on Friday night.

The Spartans would not get their first field goal in the game until there were 7:25 to go in the first half.

Faribault dominated the first half and took a 24-10 lead thanks in large part to Kade Hart blocking and altering shots.

The Falcons jumped out to a 17-point lead early in the second half before the Mayo Spartans went on a run and cut the lead to four points.

Head coach Lance Walsten took a time out and got his guys refocused and they pulled away and never looked back.

Chase Ernste was the recipient of a number of nice passes and finished with layups for 11 points.

Brady Combs tallied 15 points to lead Faribault offensively and Kade Hart finished with 12 points.

Those three guys were named our Faribault State Farm Insurance Agents Faribault players of the game.

There are still some things Faribault needs to work on.

They shot 14 of 23 from the free throw line and had more turnovers than they would probably like to have in a primarily half-court game (12).

But hey, I don't remember the last time a Faribault team traveled to Rochester Mayo and dominated the Spartans.

Mayo's top scorer was 5-foot-10 junior point guard Trajan Grimsrud with 16 points, and he sank five threes in the game.

The Spartans were 4 of 8 from the charity stripe.

In other Big Nine Conference boys action Friday night:

  • Austin rolled past Albert Lea 78-63.
  • Mankato East defeated Rochester Century 58-49.
  • Red Wing remained unbeaten after a 64-40 win over Owatonna.
  • Northfield had a happy bus ride home following a 63-58 victory over Winona.

The Falcons host Northfield in a girls/boys doubleheader at Nomeland Gym. It'll be a cancer night in honor and memory of Mike Morrissey, who passed away on November 30.

I hope to see you there. We will broadcast both games on KDHL Radio.
