This year April 11 was the earliest farmers could plant corn and have our crop insurance in effect. To this date very little corn has been planted because it has been rainy and cool. It is frustrating when the weather does not cooperate, but it kind of goes with being a farmer. You are very dependent on the weather. It is not really panic time yet as we have all of next week yet before the calendar flips to May.

We do have a couple of factors to think about to relax a bit. First with today's equipment we can plant a crop much faster than years ago. Then when you look at long-term research, if we can have corn planted by May 5 or May 10 we will still have maximum yield potential. So we still have some time. In the meantime we double check our plans and equipment to make sure everything is ready to go when the weather cooperates!
