Bethlehem Academy Activities Director Ed Friesen announced today the hiring of a new head fastpitch softball coach.

Tom Langfeldt stepped down after last season and the new head coach is very familiar with the team. Maren Viland has accepted the position and has been involved with the Faribault Fastpitch Association since 2010. Her involvement has included coaching and being a board officer.

According to Friesen's announcement, Viland graduated from St. James High School and went on to play college softball at St. Olaf College in Northfield where she was named to the MIAC All-Conference team in 2000.

Viland and her husband, Darren, have two daughters attending Bethlehem Academy. Grace is in grade 11 and has been the catcher on the team for a couple of seasons and Maggie is in grade 10.

The Cardinals will open their 2017 softball campaign on April 3 when they travel to New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva.

Their home opener is April 6 against Medford at North Alexander Park in Faribault.
