Just when you think you had a handle on all of the rumors and spoilers for 'Avengers 2,' a new and intriguing concept rears its head. Yes, it's once again time to play the "Marvel Cinematic Universe rumor and/or spoiler" game, and this time it's all about future iterations of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

The good folks over at Badass Digest (who have been a fantastic source of Marvel scoops) offered an update on a few interesting details, namely the involvement of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel. We knew that Marvel was supposedly sneaking this character into 'Avengers 2' in a bit part, but now, it seems that the character was intended to be more of a cameo ... that would come at the very end of the film ... after Captain America has assembled a new team of heroes to make up the new Avengers.

Yep, the Cinematic Universe version of the Avengers is rumored to do what the comics tend to do every year or so: shake up the lineup and get a bunch of fresh, new faces involved. Here are the key details from Badass, who report from an early draft of the script:

At the end of 'Age of Ultron' Cap will assemble a team that is a mix of familiar and new faces, leading forward into Phase Three. It's an exciting mission statement for Marvel Studios, letting audiences know that the Avengers team is more than just the guys who were in the first film. The make-up of that team is, technically, up in the air until that scene is shot (I suspect it's being saved for either scheduled reshoots or will be snuck into the schedule of 'Captain America 3,' which goes before cameras early next year), but Joss Whedon's script did indicate who would be on that team. I won't reveal all the names - and some have changed in between drafts, by the way - but one character who has always been in this new team is Captain Marvel.

Does this mean 'Avengers 2' will tease other Phase 3 characters, like Black Panther or Doctor Strange? Maybe? Who knows? This is a front on which Marvel has been very flexible. In any case, it's exciting to see that Marvel isn't afraid to shake up the status quo -- a new team of heroes every few movies could keep this series fresh and exciting for a long, long time.

However, Badass also reports that Marvel is getting cold feet about introducing Captain Marvel in this way, leaning instead towards introduce her in a solo movie. We'll keep you updated as more details come to light, but we'll know for sure when 'Avengers 2' opens on May 1, 2015.
