Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Softball One Win From State

The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers fastpitch softball team came from behind to score in the final inning today against Wabasha-Kellogg in Section 1A Tournament action in Austin.

Behind 4-3 in the top of the 7th inning senior Allison Rients doubled on a 2-2 count pitch to knock in two runs in the 5-4 Buccaneers win.

The victory places Waterville-Elysian-Morristown one win away from a MSHSL State Tournament berth.

Addyson Taylor pitched the final 5 innings for the win. The lefthander struck out 6 and did not walk a batter while giving up 3 hits and a earned run. Taylor threw 68 pitches, 43 strikes. Junior Gloria Cortez started the game and pitched the first two innings. Cortez allowed 2 hits, 2 earned runs with a strikeout and a walk. She threw 23 pitches, 16 strikes.

The Buccaneers had 10 hits, the Falcons 5 hits.

Rients had two doubles in the game, 3 RBI. Senior Ellie Ready collected two hits and recorded a stolen base. Senior Brielle Bartelt had a pair of hits and RBI. Senior Lindsay Condon struck a pair of hits. Addyson Taylor added a RBI single.

In an elimination bracket game played at the same time at Todd Park in Austin Mabel-Canton defeated Hayfield 3-1 to end the Vikings season.

Wabasha-Kellogg then ended the Cougars season 11-8.

The Falcons and Buccaneers will hook up again Thursday at 5:00 p.m. A second game would be played Thursday night if necessary.

Bottom line is Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (19-3) is one win from advancing. Wabasha-Kellogg (13-11) must win two games.
