The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers girls basketball team are the Section 2A South Subsection Champions.  The top seed Buccaneers defeated #2 seed Springfield 57-44 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter last night.

WEM got after it defensively with numerous blocked shots and deflections with their volleyball skills on display.  The Tigers had 13 first half turnovers while the Buccaneers finished with 8.  WEM scored 7 points off those turnovers and took a 26-18 halftime lead due in large part to the three point shot.  The Buccaneers had 5 first half three point baskets compared to 1 for Springfield.

Just three WEM players scored in the first half led by junior 5'5 Ellie Ready with 15 points including two three point baskets.  Junior 5'6 Brielle Bartelt tallied 8 first half points with a pair of three point baskets.  5'4 junior Alison Rients had a three point basket in the first half.

Springfield leading scorer senior 5'7 Sydney Hauger was having a tough time getting a shot off against the long Buccaneer team.  She had 4 points until late in the first half and finished with 9 points in the first half.  Just four Tigers scored in the first half.  Eighth grade 5'10 Brooklyn Sturm had 5 points off the bench.  Freshman 5'5 Maddy Digmann and sophomore 5'3 Megan Ploeger each had 2 points in the half and for the game.

Ready finished with 23 points, Bartelt had 18, junior 5'10 Toryn Richards scored all 11 of her points in the second half.  Senior 6'0 Trista Hering had 1 basket and Rients had a first half three point basket.

The Buccaneers are now 25-4 and will play Section 2A North Subsection Champion Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in the Taylor Arena on the Minnesota State Mankato campus.

The Knights defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 72-54 to avenge one of their two regular season losses.  The other loss came against Minnesota Valley Lutheran 79-75 in Sleepy Eye.

The Knights average about 71 points per game and have no seniors on their team.  Their leading scorer is sophomore 5'9 Madison Mathiowetz with 29 points per game.  Mathiowetz also average 10.5 rebounds per game, is a 79 percent free throw shooter with 150 points scored at the charity stripe this season.

Junior 5'8 Sydney Windschitl averages 16.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and leads the team in three point baskets with 28.  She is a 67% free throw shooter.
