It is not an unexpected development. The Owatonna High School boys basketball team landed the second seed for the Section 1-4A tournament despite a 24-2 overall record and No. 8 ranking in the latest Minnesota Basketball News poll. Farmington (No. 9, 19-7) got the top spot. The Tigers play in the ultra-tough South Suburban Conference and had several signature wins against highly-ranked teams.

On Saturday's High School Coaches Show, Huskies coach Josh Williams acknowledged Farmington, "had a heckuva season. They beat Lakeville North twice. They some really, really good wins. They've got more losses than we do...but at the same time, they beat Shakopee...They beat Eden Prairie. They've beaten a handful of top ten teams. So credit them. They've had an unbelievable season themselves."

Owatonna also picked up wins against numerous ranked teams, however several of those were AAA teams from the Big Nine Conference. Last year OHS was seeded behind Lakeville South and Farmington despite a better record than each of them. The Huskies went on to win the section title. Owatonna got a forfeit win over Farmington due to COVID then beat South in Lakeville.

Williams added the coaches have told the team all season, "Don't worry about the wins other teams get. Don't worry about what the scores of their games are. Just control what we can control. Just win the games we need to win. Take care of our business and we need to do. And that's what we did."

Lakeville North, a frequent hurdle for a variety of OHS teams in the playoffs, is back in the section. With the third-seed, the Panthers would come to Owatonna Saturday, March 12 if both teams win Tuesday. The Huskies host Mayo, who gave Owatonna fits in their second matchup of the season, and North hosts Century in the Tuesday, March 8 quarterfinal round.
