After a community action group in Rochester requested that the City of Rochester rename this park, the City of Rochester approved the request and will move forward in renaming East Park.

East Park will soon be renamed Martin Luthern King, Jr. Park to honor, you guessed it, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

Renaming of this park will take place during a ceremony on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 21st, 2019.

Prior to the ceremony, there will be the annual I Have a Dream breakfast at the Mayo Civic Center. The breakfast will then be followed by a march and rally to East Park. That's where the ceremony will take place at 11:30 AM.

The executive director of the Diversity Council, Dee Sabol, told KAAL this about the renaming of East Park: "'Martin Luther King, Jr. championed the rights of all individuals.  Rochester likewise has a deep and sustained commitment to compassion, reflected in the depth and breadth of human service work accomplished here by so many.'"
