South Central College of Faribault and North Mankato has been awarded a grant to update and expand their Automotive Service program.  The grand is for over $16,000 and comes from the Bosch Community Fund.  School officials say it will help them by allowing them to include environmentally friendly hybrid and electric car technology in their curriculum.

The funds will be combined with donations from other community partners and used for curriculum development and the purchase of automotive training aids including a hybrid and electric vehicle.  The addition is also expected to benefit hundreds of area high school students when thy attend Career Navigator events, workshops and fair at the college.  The Automotive Service program is on the North Mankato campus.

It's not the only news coming from South Central College (SCC).  The college is also offering a first-of-it's-kind language course this fall, "Somali Language 1."  It's the first Somali Language course to be offered at a community college in Minnesota.

SCC Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences Judy Shultz says, "This course not only provides a basic introduction to the language, but also the Somali culture."

Somali Language 1 is for students at all levels, from those with no previous experience with the language to those who have some familiarity.  The course will emphasize sensitivity to cultural differences with students learning from simple texts with cultural topics to developing their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing Somali.

The college is offering the course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in hopes of making it available to working individuals who may interact with Somalis on a regular basis.

Fall semester begins August 27.  Registration for Somali Language 1 is available at www.southcentral.edu/registration.
