Last month Shopko filed for bankruptcy and announced it was closing stores nationwide including Rochester. Last night it was announced that more stores here in Minnesota were closing, including the Shopko Hometown store in New Prague, and Shopko's in Albert Lea, Austin, and St. Peter.

The company announced in December 2018 that it would shut down about 40 stores, then added 38 more to the closure list in January. Shopko now says a total of around 250 of its locations will cease operations by the end of May.

The Shopko store in Rochester, that was announced in January's closures is expected to shut down by April 14. The latest closings that were announced put the last day open to be around May 12 according to the closure list released by Shopko yesterday.

WBAY-TV reported that liquidations at these stores will be carried out in phases. Closings are expected to begin on March 17, with all of these stores closed by May 12. Most stores' last day will fall on a Sunday.

In a letter to customers, Shopko says its remaining stores will be open during restructuring. Gift cards, warranties, credits, and returns will continue at the open stores.
