It's official, according to the Minnesota Wild website, they have agreed to terms with Bruce Boudreau to be their head coach.

Boudreau is the seventh NHL coach to win 200-plus games with multiple teams and has an awesome regular season record.

However his playoff record is not very good, so I'm very curious about the choice. He was fired by Anaheim because of the poor playoff record and fired in Washington because he couldn't win in the playoffs.

The Wild have made the NHL playoffs the past four seasons but have had trouble in the playoffs. I'm scratching my head over this one.

The 61-year-old Boudreau is a native of Canada and played for the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the old WHA for about 30 games. He ranks 12th on the all-time scoring list in the AHL and 16th in goals scored.

I know Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher tried to get a younger coach after Jacques Lemaire was let go.

Todd Richards and Mike Yeo didn't work out, so it figured he would go for a more veteran NHL coach with a proven track record.

But Boudreau has only been able to coach his NHL teams past the second round of the playoffs once and has a lifetime playoff record of 41-39. He is 1-7 in game 7s.

Boudreau was head coach in Washington from 2007-11 and in Anaheim from 2011-16. Anaheim said they let him go because of his playoff record. The Ducks suffered four consecutive game 7 losses in playoff series after having a 3-2 lead in the series.

By all accounts, Boudreau is a very good coach.

Judging by what I've read about the new head coach of the Minnesota Wild, he is a very personable guy and gets along with veterans and younger players.

He is also known for his offensive style of hockey, and I will say the Wild do need help in that area.

In nine seasons coaching in the NHL his teams have won eight division titles. That's pretty good.

But in professional athletics it's all about the playoffs.
