Gophers Football Bowl Destination, Date and Opponent Revealed

The University of Minnesota's football win over the Wisconsin Badgers last weekend gave them a 7-5 record on the season, and a January bowl date.

With the 24-7 win on Black Friday in Madison, not only did the Golden Gophers claim the Paul Bunyan's Axe traveling trophy, they knocked Bucky and the Badgers out of bowl eligibility for the first time in 23 years.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers currently have a seven-game bowl winning streak going, with their last bowl game loss came in 2015 against Missouri on New Year's Day in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, falling 33 to 17.

A six-win season is usually the minimum requirement to be eligible for a bowl bid, but in some seasons there are not enough six-win teams to fill the bowl schedule. When that's the case, the NCAA uses team grade point average to determine the next teams up. That was the case last season when the Gophers finished the regular season with a 5-7 record, getting that Quick Lane Bowl invite due to academic accomplishments.
