The Medford Tigers had a happy bus ride home tonight after a 3-0 win at the Triton Cobras.

It was an historic event because it was the first Gopher Conference match for the Cobras after moving over from the Hiawatha Valley League.

Scores were 25-25, 25-6, 25-19.  The Tigers had opened the season with two losses to H-V-L teams, Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Byron.  Both matches went four sets.

The Cobras are now 0-4 and have won one set while falling in 12 on the young season.

In the first set it looked like Triton was going to come from behind and win.  There were a lot of exciting volleys in the set and the Cobras reeled off a number of points behind the serving of senior Sereniti Schumaker to take a 21-20 lead.

Medford got the ball back on the next point and scored 5 points to end the set.

Tigers senior 6'1 Clara Kniefel owned the net with three blocks and had two ace serves in the set.  6'0 senior Isabel DeLeon added 4 kills in the set.  Both players are back from the 2019 and 2018 Medford State Tournament teams.

The second set Triton, according to their statistics, had 16 errors.  Kniefel had 3 of the Tigers 7 kills in the set.

In the third set Triton started well and got to 10 points first but errors again reared their ugly head.  11 errors in the third set and 7 in the first set bring the total to 34.

The Cobras had 18 kills on the night. Medford finished with 26 kills.

Official Medford stats had DeLeon with 8 kills, Kniefel 6 and Hannah Schull with 4 to lead the way.  Our Cashwise Foods of Owatonna Delivery of the Match came from the combo arms of DeLeon and Kniefel who also combined for 3 ace serves.

They each had 5 digs.  Kniefel had 5 solo and two assist blocks. Hannah Schull added 3 assist and 1 solo block.

Medford finished with 35 digs led by MaKenzie Kellen and Julia Niles with 8 each.  Kniefel, DeLeon and Andrea Bock had 5 digs each.

Triton's offense was led by 5'1 (according to the roster) senior Sydney Flores with 8 kills.  She also had 6 digs and a ace serve.  Junior setter Cameron Vermilyea was next with 4 kills.
