Low-Cost Ventilator Made at the University of Minnesota Approved by FDA
University of Minnesota researchers and alumnus have designed a low-cost, tabletop ventilator that has now been approved by the FDA. The ventilator is called the Coventor.
On the University of Minnesota Medical School website, the describe the Coventor as being "simple to use", it's "the size of a cereal box", and it's also "relatively inexpensive to manufacture and distribute."
The project was lead by Stephen Richardson and Aaron Tucker. Stephen is a cardiac anesthesiology fellow at U of M Medical School and M Health Fairview. Aaron is a lab supervisor at the Earl E. Bakken Medical Devices Center.
Bring Me the News reports that on Wednesday, the U of M said they will be releasing the specifications of the Coventor so other manufacturers can make it themselves. The Coventor is the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA.
In a press statement, Aaron said, "Because of its ease, simplicity and cost, we believe this concept can be scaled in many different designs.”
