A local Faribault business has been around for 70 years! This week and weekend Burkhartzmeyer Shoes is celebrating their 70th birthday. Yes, if you did the math right, a 70th birthday means Burkhartzmeyer Shoes has been around since 1949!

From now through Saturday, Burkhartzmeyer Shoes will be celebrating their birthday at their store in downtown Faribault. There will be cookies, coffee, and other treats to celebrate.

Because I'm curious, I wanted to know what was going on back when Burkhartzmeyer Shoes first opened. A lot of things have changed in 70 years!

According to The People History, back in 1949 gas was just 17 cents a gallon, the average cost of a new home was $7,450, and the minimum hourly wage was 70 cents an hour. Also, the first Polaroid camera was sold for $89.95, this first Volkswagen Beetle was sold, and Meryl Streep was born in 1949 on June 22nd.
