KDHL’s Gordy Kosfeld to Receive MIAC’s Mike Augustin Award
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Longtime Carleton College Knights radio broadcaster and KDHL Radio personality Gordy Kosfeld has been named as the recipient of the MIAC's Mike Augustin Award for 2024-25. The honor is issued annually by the conference's sports information directors in recognition of outstanding media contributions to MIAC athletic programs and their student-athletes.
"What fans enjoy most about Gordy Kosfeld is how deeply he cares about the MIAC overall and the Carleton Knights in particular," said Carleton sports information director David Pape. "He loves to celebrate the successes of our teams in competition and our student-athletes in the classroom. It has been a privilege having him call Carleton games the last two decades."
Kosfeld came to KDHL in June 1987 and has called countless contests from the sidelines and press boxes of numerous small college and high school venues across Minnesota. He began working MIAC games as a broadcaster for St. Olaf College in 1988 and added the titles of news director at KDHL in 1999 and sports director in 2002, roles he continues to fill.
In 2004, Kosfeld stopped covering the Oles and took his microphone across the Cannon River in order to become the play-by-play voice of the Carleton football, men's and women's basketball, and volleyball programs.
"We're so grateful to Gordy for the decades of service he has given to the MIAC and its student-athletes," MIAC Associate Commissioner BJ Pickard said. "He's provided the soundtrack for so many of our games over the years, and it's a great privilege to formally recognize him for the role he's played in making such great MIAC memories for our competitors and fans."
The Mike Augustin Award was first presented by the MIAC in 1999. Mike Augustin was a longtime sportswriter at the Pioneer Press and was an articulate friend, follower, and advocate of the MIAC. The Conference established the award in his honor following Augustin's death from a sudden illness in December of 1997.
"I am humbled by the honor especially since I knew Mike Augustin personally," said Kosfeld. "To be mentioned in the same sentence is something I would have never imagined. My connection with Carleton has also been a dream come true. I firmly believe in the mission of putting academics first without losing passion for the sport played."
Kosfeld was selected as this year's MIAC Mike Augustin Award recipient by the Conference's sports information directors at their annual business meeting in August. He will formally receive the award on Monday, January 6 during a ceremony at halftime of the MIAC men's basketball game between St. Olaf College and Carleton College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Carleton.
