The identity of a man found dead in the river in downtown Rockford, Illinois has been revealed following an autopsy.

According to the press release, a call was made to 911 on Sunday (2/18) around 3 pm from a resident who saw a dead body floating in the river near Indian Terrace, located just off the Rock River.

Rockford Firefighters arrived on scene and entered the river where they discovered the body of a dead male. Personnel from the RFD removed the body from the river and he was pronounced dead at 3:35pm by staff of the Winnebago County Coroner's office.

Following an autopsy by the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, the man who died has been identified as 60-year-old Larry Sanford or Rockford, Illinois.

"Preliminary autopsy results are pending further studies at this time," according to the Winnebago County Coroner.

An investigation into the man's death is ongoing by the Rockford Police Department.
