Coon Rapids, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minnesota woman has admitted to driving drunk and causing a crash last year that claimed the life of a pregnant woman.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Anoka County Court last August, a preliminary breath test measured Makayla April Sue Richardson's blood-alcohol-concentration at .18 after the pickup truck she was driving collided with an SUV at an intersection in Coon Rapids. A passenger in the SUV, 26-year-old Melinda Thao of Coon Rapids, and her unborn child later died from their injuries.

The charges against the 21-year-old Mounds View woman, who was pulling a trailer with the pickup, alleged that she drove through a red light and smashed into the other vehicle as the driver was taking a left turn on a green arrow. The criminal complaint states that Richardson told the police officers who responded to the crash that she had been drinking, but had only consumed one alcoholic drink. She also admitted that she was speeding and did not have a valid driver's license.

During a court hearing this morning in Anoka County, Richardson entered guilty pleas to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide. She is scheduled to be sentenced in March.
