Legendary Minnesota Hockey Announcer Has Passed Away at Age 96

A man known to many longtime Minnesotans as the Voice of Hockey has passed away.

His son, current University of Minnesota Hockey announcer Wally Shaver, today shared the news of his father's death today with The Athletic.

He says Al Shaver died at his home in British Columbia after a brief illness. He was 96 years old.

According to NHL.com, Shaver became well-known throughout Minnesota soon after he arrived in the state in 1967 to serve as the play-by-play announcer for Minnesota's new NHL franchise. he stayed with the Minnesota North Stars for the next 26 years until the team was sold and moved to Dallas Texas in 1993.

Shaver than spent the next three years announcing for the D and Gophers hockey team before he retired in 1996.
