Huge Concrete Pour Today For Mayo Clinic Proton Beam Expansion
A massive concrete pouring operation is taking place in downtown Rochester today.
Mayo Clinic says approximately 1700 cubic yards of concrete is being poured to create a 4-foot-thick concrete slab that will serve as the floor for the expansion of the protein beam therapy facility located in the Anderson Building. The thick concrete is needed to provide a stable base for the delicate particle accelerator used to create the tiny protons used to treat cancer have other complex medical conditions.
A news release says the amount of concrete being poured today is equivalent to the loads from 170 cement trucks. It's expected to take the two pump trucks and 40 construction workers assigned to the task about seven hours to complete the pour, but it's anticipated that will take until around 6 AM Friday the level and finish the concrete surface. The $200 million expansion of the proton beam therapy center was announced by Mayo Clinic in 2021. The 110,000-square-foot facility, which is designed to boost Mayo's capacity to offer the high-tech therapy to an additional 900 patients per year, is expected to become operational in 2027.
