The National Weather Service says these types of funnels do not approach the ground and do not pose a threat in most cases. However, in rare cases they do touch down. In that event, it becomes a tornado and damage and injuries are possible.

Anyone observing a funnel cloud approaching the ground should seek shelter immediately.
