Preliminary information released by the Richfield Police Department says the fatal officer-involved shooting occurred around 3:30 Wednesday morning. 

The fatal shooting happened near a Middle School.

Richfield Police: Armed Car Prowling Suspect Killed, Officer Wounded in Exchange of Gunfire

Officers responded to the report of a car prowler Wednesday morning in the 7500 block of Morgan Ave in Richfield.

Police say the suspect fled on foot after being found by responding officers. 

After taking off, the suspect brandished a firearm and exchanged gunfire with an officer, authorities said. Both the suspect and officer were hit during the gunfire exchange. 

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Police also said the officer was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand. 

BCA Responds to Scene

The names of the suspect and officer have not been released. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) posted on X that its agents are at the scene. 

The BCA says more information will be available after agents finish their preliminary investigation.
