Downtown Rochester Apartment Project Before Planning Commission

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Planning and Zoning Commission meeting this evening includes a review of a proposal to greatly expand the size of a planned housing project in downtown Rochester.

The developers of the City Walk Apartments won approval last year for a plan to construct a six-story building with 142 apartment units at the former Just Rite Foods Store location and an adjacent property on the southwest corner of the intersection of 2nd Street and 6th Avenue Southwest. Those plans have been revised in response to Mayo Clinic's announcements concerning its plans for new facilities in downtown Rochester, and the developer is now asking for the city's permission to build a 12-story apartment complex with more than 360 rental units and three levels of below-grade parking.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is being asked to recommend approval of a conditional use permit for the project. The advisory panel will also be holding a public hearing on the developer's request for a major modification permit involving the 125-foot height of the proposed apartment building.
