Authorities Pursue Abduction Suspect Throughout SE Minnesota (Update)
Update 8/28 12:30 p.m. Cannon Falls, MN (KROC-AM News)-
A Minneapolis man is in custody for false imprisonment and for fleeing multiple law enforcement agencies in southeast Minnesota.
A news release from the Cannon Falls Police Department says officers responded to Casey’s General Store around 10:45 a.m. Saturday on the report of a woman in her 30’s escaping a man that had abducted her in the Twin Cities earlier that morning. Police made contact with the woman and an officer located and began pursuing the suspect through the west side of Cannon Falls. Police say the suspect’s vehicle struck the officer’s squad car before fleeing north on Hwy. 52.
The State Patrol monitored the vehicle’s location through traffic cameras stationed along Hwy. 52. Troopers lost the suspect’s vehicle when it exited from Hwy. 52 to Dakota County Rd. 47 near Hampton. Law enforcement then issued an alert to surrounding agencies with the vehicle’ description.
Later on a Northfield officer spotted the vehicle fleeing while westbound on Hwy. 19 at a high-rate of speed, heading for I-35. Troopers again tracked the vehicle southbound on I-35 through traffic cameras. The State Patrol and Rice County Sheriff’s Office then found the vehicle but the man was again able to escape law enforcement by fleeing into Faribault, according to the news release.
A citizen then reported the vehicle's location to law enforcement. Officials set up a perimeter and brought the man into custody. Police learned from the woman that she got into the man’s vehicle around dawn under the impression the two were going somewhere else. She said the man drove her around the Twin Cities Metro and wouldn’t allow her to leave, the news release states.
The initial investigation indicates the woman may have been taken from a dock and lake near Maple Grove. The woman told officers the man took off at a high rate of speed after she screamed for help in the direction of a parking lot near the dock in Maple Grove, the news release says.
Police say the suspect, who reportedly refused to give officers his name, is now in the Goodhue County Jail for false-imprisonment, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a traffic crash. Police say the investigation is ongoing and that the Goodhue County Attorney will be preparing a formal complaint for charges.
