If you are growing sick of the color orange, I'm sorry to tell you that more orange is coming to a roadway near you. A two-and-a-half-year road project will begin next Monday, July 22, and won't end until 2027. The area affected by the road construction? The road between Monticello and Albertville.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation had more details on the project through its website.

The project is being called the I-94 Gap project, and it will span from Highway 25 in Monticello to County Road 19 in Albertville. Here is what the Department of Transportation says about the project, and why it's being done over the next 2+ years.

Improve and expand I-94 to six lanes, three in each direction, to close the gap between Albertville and Monticello, Wright County. All six lanes to open late fall 2026.

  • Reconstruct the road surface
  • Add a third westbound lane from Co. Rd. 37 in Albertville to west of Hwy 25 in Monticello
  • Add a third eastbound lane from west of Hwy 25 in Monticello to Co. Rd. 19 in Albertville
  • Replace the westbound bridge over Wright Co. Rd. 19 in Albertville
  • Widen the westbound bridge over Co. Rd. 75 in Monticello
  • Replace or repair underground pipes
  • Install two noise walls along I-94 in the Monticello area
    • South side of EB I-94 east of Wright Co. Rd. 18/Fenning Ave.
    • North side of WB I-94, east of Broadway St.

Motorists this summer will only have to deal with the construction during mostly off-peak hours and overnights, but that will change next spring.
