What makes a town cozy and why is that important as we head into fall and winter? Being cozy is usually related to warmth and comfort. So how do two of America's winter destinations make Stacker's list of "50 Coziest Towns in America"?

Because they have a lot to offer even during the winter months. And, there are plenty of places to go and things to do that will make you feel cozy after you've had your fill of winter activities.

I do feel like leaving Sioux Falls off this list was a mistake, however. With all of our fantastic breweries, bakeries, coffee shops, museums, and places to hang out, hear some live music, have a great meal, a lively conversation, and a few laughs, Sioux Falls definitely is a cozy town.

But that's just my opinion.

Here are the two towns in our part of the world that ended up on Stacker's cozy list.

Rapid City, South Dakota

Praised for being close to all things Black Hills- - Rapid City was chosen as the perfect base of operations for winter visitors to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and The Badlands.

They also said that Rapid City

is home to a charming downtown lined with shops, restaurants, and an ice skating rink that's larger than the one at Rockefeller Center.- -Stacker

This college community of around 68,000 people was chosen by Stacker primarily because much like South Dakotans, hardy Minnesotans know how to make the best of harsh winter weather.

They pointed to the nearby Spicer Winterfest as the perfect example of outdoor activities that ultimately lead to a cozy ending.
