
How To Preserve Your Fishing Line Like A Pro
Every day we talk to Russ at Marine General on The Breakfast Club with Ken + Lauren. They are celebrating 50 years of being in business. He started his marine supply store on London Road to serve anglers and outdoor enthusiasts on their way up to the North Shore. It's a locals' favorite for anything having to do with the water, and their local knowledge is well respected.
One of many things Marine General does a good job of is predicting what factories and companies are doing, and buying large quantities to pass savings on to its customers. Russ was telling us about a great deal on spools of fishing line, and had a tip for how to keep fishing lines from deteriorating over time if you buy too much and have extra.
Even if you don't use fishing line, over time the line strength decays due to ultraviolet rays and other environmental factors, it's hard enough to hook a walleye; you certainly don't want a bad fishing line to be the reason you can't land it, right?
Russ says the trick is to put it in the freezer. That caught me off guard. I'd never think of keeping fishing line in the freezer, but he explains why it works. "It's a cold, dark place to keep the line, and it will stay fresh. It's protected from UVs, and the cold temperature will keep it fresh."

So there you have it. If you have extra fishing line you aren't going to be using in the near future, throw it in the freezer. You may just have to explain it to your spouse.
