Opening Date Announced For Duluth's Historic William A. Irvin

Spring has sprung in the Northland and more annual traditions will be arriving soon, such as the opening of the Portland Malt Shoppe on May 1.

The William A. Irvin Floating Museum, another popular destination located in Canal Park, will be open for the season shortly after that.

The Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) confirmed the 2024 opening date Monday afternoon through its Facebook page.

When Will The William A. Irvin Floating Museum Be Open For The Season?

According to the DECC, the William A. Irvin Floating Museum will officially open its big metal door for tours on Friday, May 3.

Initially, it will only be open Fridays through Sundays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Memorial Day. Then, the following schedule will apply:

Beginning May 30: Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
June 24 through August 25: Open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
Beginning August 29: Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
The last day for regular tours will be on September 15 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Adult admission: $20.00
Students 11+: $15.00
Seniors (60 & up): $10.00
Children (3-10): $5.00 (children under the age of 3 do not require a ticket to board the ship)
Active Military Personnel (with ID): FREE

The William A. Irvin is a Blue Star Museum as of 2023, which means they offer free admission to active Military personnel and up to 5 of their family members.

Know Before You Go

The William A. Irvin is a station-to-station tour that you can do at your own pace. The DECC offers visitors some help tips to know before they board:

Museum staff are strategically positioned at key locations to interpret spaces, answer questions, and direct guests to their next station.
The Experience lasts between 45-60 minutes.
Parking is available in the DECC Parking lot across from the William A Irvin for an additional fee.
Restrooms are located amidships in the Gift Shop and accessible from a staircase in the center of the vessel.
Due to its historical nature as a retired freighter, the Irvin is not ADA accessible and includes multiple staircases to access certain locations.
Groups of 20 or more can visit the Group Sales website for additional booking information.
